The Dean of the College of Health and Sports Sciences (CHSS) at the University of Bahrain (UOB), Dr. Leena Mohammed Khonji, confirmed that the Master’s Program in Adult Health Nursing is receiving regional and local attention, for preparing cadres to meet the needs of continuous development in health care systems.
CHSS is currently offering a master’s program in adult health nursing, while in the past three years, the College has offered a master’s program in physical therapy, which is about to graduate its first batch this year.
Dr. Khonji indicated that the master’s program in adult health nursing offered by the College is in line with the recommendations of the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA), to graduate nurses specializing in advanced care, stressing that the program is making progress in various dimensions, due to the support that the College received from the president of the university, Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al-Mudhahki.
As she stated: “The program helps graduates of a bachelor’s degree in nursing sciences to continue their studies without resorting to studying abroad, in addition, it increases job opportunities in specialized departments affiliated with government and private institutions, which wish to attract nurses specialized in advanced care, who are able to develop health care, and keep pace with scientific development,” noting that “this degree and its functional features are included in the requirements of the professional qualifications of NHRA, as the graduate is granted a license to practice the profession under the title of an advanced specialized nurse.”
She further added, “This field is a qualitative leap in the nursing practices provided by nurses in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which opens a wide horizon for advanced nursing practices.”.
On the other hand, Dr. Khonji pointed out that “The Master’s Program in Adult Health Nursing enhances the concepts of scientific research and the publication of scientific research in refereed scientific journals, through scientific theses that highlight the application of best nursing practices, in order to provide the best health services in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and to achieve the sustainable development goals and Bahrain Economic Vision 2030”.
Regrading what distinguishes the Master’s Program in Adult Health Nursing, the Dean of CHSS explained that “The Master’s program in Adult Health Nursing is distinguished by graduating nurses specialized in advanced care in the field of internal surgical nursing and critical care. Also, the program promotes the inclusion of the latest technologies in teaching, clinical training, and scientific research, to develop the nursing profession in the Kingdom of Bahrain, through advanced nursing care”.
Dr. Khonji said that the College is working on updating several postgraduate programs, including: Higher Diploma in Obstetrics and Midwifery, Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, Higher Diploma in Cardiac Care Nursing, Higher Diploma in Primary Health Nursing, and Higher Diploma in Emergency Nursing, in order to keep pace with international standards, and meet to the needs of the labor market.
Moreover, on the College’s plans to expand in the postgraduate studies, she stated that based on a study conducted by the College for the labor market during the current year, the results showed the need for several nursing specialties in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
She indicated that the College is considering the preparation of new programs of a special nature, such as the Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing, the Higher Diploma in Pediatric and Newborn Nursing, and the Higher Diploma in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Nursing.
Furthermore, Dr. Lina Khonji indicated that the recent statistics of the nursing workforce in the Kingdom of Bahrain reveal a shortage of nursing cadres in the mentioned specialties, especially the field of midwifery and obstetrics, an in the past three years, a master’s program in midwifery and obstetrics and a master’s in psychiatric nursing has been approved.
Also, the dean pointed out that there is a tendency by the College to offer master’s programs in diagnostic radiology with its subspecialties, as well as a master’s degree in pharmacy, stressing that all these programs depend on providing academic requirements and obtaining approvals from the concerned authorities at the University and abroad.
