Prof. Hamzah: The Establishment of a Clinical Simulation Laboratory for Nursing Sciences at UoB

The President of the University of Bahrain (UoB), Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, announced the initiation of the establishment of a clinical simulation laboratory at the University’s College of Health and Sports Sciences (CHSS).

Prof Hamzah stated that “This project is a new and qualitative leap in the process of teaching and learning in nursing sciences and keeps pace with the development witnessed by this sector, pushing the wheel of nursing in the Kingdom of Bahrain forward. As the establishment of this specialized laboratory in CHSS will contribute to training Nursing cadres according to the highest international standards, and according to curricula based on clinical simulation”.

Furthermore, Prof. Hamza explained that “ The new laboratory project comes in line with the development plan set by UoB, and it is a positive step within the scientific progress that the world is witnessing in the field of nursing sciences, and modern trends in clinical training in nursing, as well as the necessity of having theoretical study and practical application before dealing with the patients on the ground in hospitals”.

For her part, the Head of the Nursing Department at CHSS, who is in charge of the clinical simulation nursing laboratory project, stated that: “The project to establish clinical simulation laboratories is important for its pioneering educational and professional aspects, as it keeps pace with modern educational developments in nursing training and education”.

Moreover, she stated: “The simulation laboratory will activate parts of the curriculum in a semi-realistic and virtual educational environment that reflects reality, and it will be used as an educational strategy that contributes to improving healthcare outcomes, providing training opportunities for students, and developing students’ practical skills using modern technologies.”

While Dr. Khenji affirmed that “ The simulation laboratory project aims to provide a semi-realistic environment for practical application, through the use of simulation devices that have an effective role in developing clinical skills among students, bridging the gap between theoretical and practical education, enhancing patient safety and the application of the best practices, developing clinical critical thinking and decisions-making skills for nursing students”.

Also, the head of the Nursing Department at the College added that “The simulated rooms will be equipped with beds, examination tables, and diagnostic tools, in addition to audio-visual digital monitoring systems (cameras and microphones), in order to photograph and record the examination steps, and the student’s conversation with virtual patients (high-resolution virtual dolls) that work electronically according to preconceived scenarios, and will be live broadcasted through the digital rooms.”.

Furthermore, Dr. Khenji pointed out that the laboratory will be an important platform for holding clinical exams, which will contribute to refining the clinical skills of nursing students, the accuracy of evaluating cases and making sound decisions based on scientific research evidence in patient care, in preparation for their training in a real clinical environment at the hospitals and medical centers of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
