The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, the University of Bahrain, and Bahrain Public Transport Company announced finalizing plans on running main transport lines to and from the university’s premises in Sakhir, starting Sunday, September 18, 2022.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Fatima Mohammad Al-Malki, stated, “We have discussed -for more than six months- with all concerned parties to provide transportation service for students on more than one line in the network of Bahrain’s current main roads. We are continuing the discussion to expand these options in the future, as needed and in line with the facilities the company provides.”

Dr. Al-Malki added “Over the past years, the University of Bahrain has been encouraging its students, academics, and administrators to use public transportation to relieve pressure on roads and reduce emission of harmful gases resulting from fuel burning. It is worth noting that buses provided by the company reach the designated stations at regular times. They are air-conditioned, modern, and equipped with Wi-Fi service. In addition, they provide services for people with disabilities, and give priority to ladies (employees and students). Passengers can make full use of their time while moving to and from the University.”

She noted that the agreement is the first phase of an integrated project. In this phase, students will be transported mainly to and from the University premises in Sakhir, as the other two campuses of the university (Isa Town and Salmaniya) already have a transportation network connected by buses across more than one normal itinerary. Dr. Al-Malki confirmed that ongoing discussions with Bahrain Public Transport Company working to approve a “student card” with multiple benefits, primarily reducing the ticket price.

Dr. Al-Maliki stated that one of the advantages of this agreement is that it provides flexibility for students in attending and leaving the University according to their academic timetables. She mentioned that there are about 26 trips daily to and from the University premises in Sakhir, at various times, starting at 6:30 a.m., and ending with a trip leaving university at 7 p.m.

Similarly, the Dean of Student Affairs confirmed the number of internal buses on Sakhir campus will be increased to transport students between the various buildings, as UoB continues to conduct studies to develop and facilitate the individual transfer process for university affiliates inside the university premises in Sakhir, especially when these studies have seen great progress, and will soon be announced.
