Students at the University of Bahrain stressed the importance of public speaking competitions in English, and their role in developing their language skills and increasing their self-confidence, which would help them overcome the fear of public speaking and stage fright.
The English Language Center held a competition “Listen to My Story”, aimed to encourage students to master the art of public speaking and apply the speaking skills they acquired during the Foundation English Language Program at the Center.
During the event held under the auspices of the President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al-Mudhahka, ten students qualified for the final stage of the competition. After passing some intensive and individual workshops, they presented their stories to the jury and the audience.
Student Mohammad Adel, who won the first place, stated, “The experience of movingly telling a true story the student experienced was very useful, as it required exerting great efforts in training, which is in students’ interest.”
Adel called for expansion of public speaking programs, contests and speaking competitions because they are very useful. The stories of the participating students centered around various themes, including their experiences with bullying, how they faced difficulties, and the elements of academic excellence.
After announcing the results, the winners of the first three places and all the participants in the competition were honored.
For her part, student Fatima Al-Haiki, the third-place winner, stated, “The experience is wonderful because it teaches students the language arts, and helps them make full use of their time. In addition, students get participation certificates.”
Fatima added, “I have strengthened my relationship with the professors, and gained more knowledge in language arts, thanks to my experience at the competition organized by the Center.” She urged her colleagues to take part in such competitions.
