The University of Bahrain along with many institutions of the public and private sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain participated in the “Earth Hour” event, which took place last Saturday evening, March 26.
The University of Bahrain switched off unnecessary lights for an hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., to raise awareness of the importance of reducing unnecessary energy consumption, which would have positive impacts on all components of the environment.
The University of Bahrain is seeking to raise awareness of the importance of this international event, through encouraging its affiliates, especially its students amounting to approximately 32,000, to adopt behavior that enhances environment safety and minimizes damage to it. The “Earth Hour” event was adopted in the program of UoB in 2008, a year after the launch of the program internationally.
This international event is organized on the last Saturday of March every year. Lights are switched off for an hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., in the local time of each country. More than 7,000 cities participated in the event this year.
This initiative, adopted by the World Wide Fund for Nature, aims to attract people’s attention to the impacts of the power they consume on the planet, and to motivate governments and individuals to take climate action.
