The World Health Organization Renews the Accreditation of the Nursing Department in the College of Health and Sport Sciences as a Regional Training Center

The World Health Organization renewed the accreditation of the Nursing Department, College of Health and Sports Sciences, University of Bahrain as World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Nursing Development in the Middle East for the next four years, from September 2022 to September 2026.

On this occasion, the President of the University of Bahrain, Dr. Jawaher bint Shaheen Al-Mudhaki, lauded the active role played by the WHO Collaborating Center. The renewal, approved by the regional director of the Center in Cairo, Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, aims for the development of nursing at the University.

Dr. Al-Mudhaki  stated, “The renewal of accreditation of the Nursing Department at the College of Health and Sport Sciences as a regional center for the development of the nursing profession is a new achievement of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the University of Bahrain, and reflects the trust of WHO in the importance of the work and quality of the Nursing Department in the development of the nursing profession in the fields of education, training and scientific research at the local, Gulf, and regional levels.

Dr. Al-Mudhaki added that the Center, represented by the Nursing Department at the College of Health and Sport Sciences, is the first and only center in the Arab Gulf region, which has been accredited by the World Health Organization since 1990, and is the mainstay for developing the profession of nursing and midwifery in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Center has been preparing cadres of qualified nurses for more than forty-five years and providing the Kingdom of Bahrain with a specialized workforce to raise the quality of education in the nursing profession and improve its outputs, which is embodied in the nursing degrees offered by the College, starting with the Associate Diploma in Nursing to the master’s degree in nursing. This development was the outcome of collaboration with partners in the World Health Organization to develop the profession and graduate qualified nursing cadres, that can provide the best nursing services, in line with health for all strategy.”

For her part, the Dean of the College of Health and Sport Sciences and the Director of “World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Nursing Development (WHOCC)”, Dr. Lina Mohammad Khonji, indicated that the renewal of trust in the Nursing Department at the College is the outcome of a thorough assessment carried out by the organization through its regional office in Cairo for all tasks and activities carried out by the Center in the past four years, according to the plan previously agreed upon as well as the future plan of the collaborating Center for the next four years. In addition, the renewal of trust was the result of the tireless efforts and diligent work of the team of the nursing department, with the continuous support of the President of the University and follow-up of the representative of the World Health Organization in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Tasneem Atatreh.

Dr. Khonji added that in the next four years the Center will strive to achieve common goals, through supporting the work of the organization to focus on introducing the findings based on scientific research in the field of the nursing profession, and all issues related to education, safe clinical practice, improving clinical skills and the basic competencies of midwives who provide nursing care in primary health care units.

Meanwhile, Dr. Atatreh praised renewal of the accreditation of the Nursing Department at the College of Health and Sport Sciences as World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Nursing development. She affirmed, “We take pride in the partnership with the University of Bahrain, and work on quality programs at the level of the Eastern Mediterranean, which focus on developing educational programs specialized in the practice of nursing and midwifery professions and enhancing the efficiency of midwives in primary care units.” She noted that “the renewal of the partnership is a reflection of a professional relationship extending over decades towards achieving the strategy of health for all.”
