University of Bahrain Academian Elected President of IEEE Region 8- Europe, Middle East, and Africa

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) elected the Head of the Physics Department, College of Science, the University of Bahrain, Dr Hanan Mubarak Albuflasa, as President of IEEE Region 8, representing 47 countries in North Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Europe.

Dr. Albuflasa was elected for this post after passing the interviews and meetings conducted for candidates of the member states.

The IEEE is the largest technical professional organization in the world with 6000 engineers. It aims to develop technology for mankind’s benefit through publishing research in scientific journals, holding conferences, adhering to technological standards, and organizing professional and educational activities.

Dr. Albuflasa stated, “I will strive during my presidency to enhance interdependence between member states in the field of energy through supporting the activities of local energy associations in these states to carry out their tasks in providing society with scientific and engineering information about energy sources and systems in general.” She stressed that she will seek to raise awareness on the Energy Society’s vital role as the world’s largest forum that provides technological developments in the electric power industry, updates standards to overcome obstacles that hider the equipment and systems development, and educate stakeholders, whether energy professionals or the general public interested in the energy field.

It is relevent to note that Dr. Hanan Albuflasa, Head of the Physics Department, College of Science, University of Bahrain, is an Assistant Professor of Renewable Energy, and holds a PhD and MSc in Renewable Energy from the Center for Renewable Energy Systems Technology, Loughborough University, UK. She represents the Kingdom of Bahrain in the GCC Technical Specifications Committee for Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems. She is also an associate member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for TC 82 and TC 88 and a liaison officer for the Commission. She is the principal researcher in some contractual research between the University of Bahrain and international universities in the field of renewable energy.
