UoB Architects Present Environmentally Friendly Architectural Projects 

 

The students of the Department of Architecture at the University of Bahrain (UoB) discussed environmentally friendly architectural solutions in their graduation projects, as they presented the results of the first stage of their graduation projects of research and methodological introductions. 

Nearly 120 students submitted the research material for the first stage of developing their graduation projects on Wednesday (30 December 2020), through the distance learning platforms “Blackboard Ultra” and “MS Teams”. 

As Dr. Haifa bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Head of the Department of Architecture and Interior Design at the College of Engineering at the University, explained that the students presented new ideas in their graduation projects research, noting that they addressed the concept of sustainability in innovative ways based on the scientific methods used in the development of academic scientific research. 

The Head of the Department believed that the students’ ideas met with the international scientific argument to achieve a sustainable urban environment that responds to economic, social and environmental changes. 

Also, Dr. Haifa Al Khalifa expressed her pleasure with the participation of external experts and arbitrators for the projects, the level of research presented, and the skills of the students that were admired by the arbitrators. 

At this stage, students are supposed to conduct integrated research to study the proposed project, which includes specifying the project, studying the theoretical concepts associated with it and the social and cultural needs of the community in which the project is to be established. 

On her part, the Coordinator of Graduation Projects in the Department, Dr. Manal Jameel Khalaf, pointed out that the students’ research included studying the functional needs of the project by analyzing models from similar local, regional and international projects to develop a special career program for the proposed project. 

Also, she pointed out that the students consider several dimensions in their research, including the privacy of society in general and the targeted individuals in particular. 

Regarding the students’ projects, she stated that “The topics of the projects varied, as they presented cultural and tourism projects such as museums, libraries, tourist reception stations, resorts and hotels, as well as service projects for the educational sector in its various stages such as schools and colleges, health projects such as specialized health centers and hospitals, and projects that serve the business sector, technology and projects. commercial and others. 

The projects are supervised by ten professors from the Department of Architecture and Interior Design, and the Department invites a group of academics and professionals practicing architecture from inside and outside the Kingdom of Bahrain to discuss the proposed research and projects and evaluate the students’ work, benefiting them from their accumulated experiences and enriching the discussion so that students can use that in developing their projects in the next stage, which is the design stage. 

Furthermore, Dr. Khalaf stated that the students benefited from discussing their research with internal and external arbitrators, noting that architecture students, in general, are accustomed to discussing their architectural designs and presenting their method of creating sensory spaces. However, the experience of discussing theoretical research with specialized arbitrators who have experience in the architectural field is a new experience for them. 

It is worth noting that the list of panelists included architectural experts from several countries, including the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the United States of America.
