UoB Holds the Second Week of Big Data
The University of Bahrain (UoB) recently held the second week of the “Big Data” event over three consecutive days on the Microsoft Teams platform, this event comes within the activities of the Master’s Program in Big Data Science and Analysis, which is offered by the Colleges of Science and Information Technology at UoB, in cooperation with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the United Kingdom, which recently approved the program to be the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Middle East region.
The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Hilo, and the Dean of the College of Information Technology, Dr. Lamya Mohammed Al-Jasmi expressed their pride in the program’s achievements, especially after the graduation of the first batch of its students. Also, they commended the effort exerted by the program’s Administrative Committee under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department at the College of Science at UoB, Dr. Sawsan Juma’a Hilal, in facilitating students’ affairs and organizing activities that would enhance students’ skills and expand their knowledge in the field of data science, as it is a vital field with clear applications in several areas that serve the community.
On the first day of the event, two lectures were held on the uses of machine science, and reviewed the latest developments in this field.
Moreover, the Co-Director of the College of Computer Science and Mathematics and Head of the Applied Mathematics Department at LJMU, Professor Dr. Paulo Lisboa, gave a lecture entitled “Interpretation of Models Used in Machine Science”. While Associate Professor of Data Science at LJMU, Dr. Evan Oller, gave a lecture entitled “Uses of Machine Science in the Health Sector”.
The second and third days of the event week were devoted to presenting a specialized workshop on ways to deal with irregular and flowing data using the mongoDB system, which was presented by Associate Professor from the Department of Applied Mathematics at LJMU, Dr. Sandra Ortega.
It is worth mentioning that the workshop was purely practical, as it included extensive training sessions, with the aim of refining and developing skills for dealing with this important type of data, and the workshop was well received by the postgraduate students participating in the event.
