UoB Launches a National Initiative to Combat Drugs

During her participation in the celebration of the World Anti-Drug Day, organized by the General Department and Criminal Evidence at the Ministry of Interior, the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Bahrain (UoB), Dr. Fatima Mohamed Al-Maliki, announced the launch of a national initiative to combat drugs and psychotropic substances.

Within a working paper presented via the cyberspace, Dr. Al-Maliki stated that “Under the patronage of the President of the University, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, UoB will start organizing a national campaign at the beginning of the first semester, through which it aims to educate UoB students about the harms of drugs and how to combat them, titled “A Youth Society Without Drugs”.

Dr. Al-Maliki explained that this initiative will be organized each academic year, in coordination with the supporting bodies represented in the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health, the concerned academic colleges at the University, and the University’s Department of Information and University Relations, in addition to the help of students from associations and clubs in organizing this campaign.

Moreover, Dr. Al-Maliki confirmed that the campaign will continue for a week, during which a societal culture rejecting the use of narcotic substances will be spread, and the awareness of university students and youth will be raised, and that is through workshops and specialized meetings in colleges, raising awareness on family and its role in establishing a cohesive family, raising awareness of the different stages of growth in childhood and adolescence, as well as explaining the role of media in confronting the drug issue, and introducing university students to local regulations and laws, in addition to the participation of academic members of professors in this week, to educate students and motivate them to write research papers on the subject.

Dr. Al-Maliki indicated that “UoB decided to organize this initiative as a matter of community partnership, and as an educational institution, it aims to focus on the category of university students, whose presence constitutes the majority of adolescents and youth, and they are the main engines of life in society, and the beating heart of renewal and development, as young people are the vanguard, backbone, and active and effective force of society, who are capable of conquering challenges and overcoming obstacles that prevent them from performing their societal roles.”

It is noteworthy that the United Nations established the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to be on the 26th of June of each year.
