UoB Students Hold an Interactive Forum to Promote Environmental Awareness

In a meeting organized by the College of Science at the University of Bahrain (UoB), UoB students reviewed distinguished environmental topics and projects and exchanged ideas on preserving the environment and achieving sustainable development goals.

The Dean of the College of Science at the University, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Al-Hilo, stressed the importance of raising environmental awareness by explaining the dangers of harmful practices, and identifying opportunities for sustainable development, noting that such meetings organized by the College aim to raise the level of public environmental awareness, as one of the most important inputs to ensure the continuation of sustainable development and preserving the environment.

The virtual interactive environmental student meeting was moderated via the MS Teams platform by the Assistant Professor of environment and molecular biotechnologies at the College of Science, director of the Friends of the Environment Club, Dr. Maysoon Nedham Awadh, with the participation of many university students from various disciplines.

Dr. Awadh emphasized the importance of preserving the environment by achieving sustainable development goals, which can be done by serving its three main dimensions: the environmental dimension, the economic dimension, and the social dimension, noting the efforts made by the students in preparing the scientific material and presenting it during the meeting.

The students from the College of Engineering, Abdullah Hussam Al-Deen (Civil Engineering) and Huda Jamal (Architecture), talked about green buildings and the role of the architect in preserving the environment by creating a living environment that reduces the use of non-renewable resources, and reduces harmful outputs and emissions from buildings, as reflected in the way buildings are constructed, the materials used in their construction, and the methods of energy consumption, in addition to the methods of ventilation.

While the student at the College of Science, Ruqaya Mustafa (Physics) discussed the topic of using renewable energy sources, as she presented her idea for a distinguished environmental project in which she used computing and information technology systems to simulate portable energy systems used globally and develop them to serve the applications of clean and renewable energy sources.

Also, the two students from the Department of Life Sciences, College of Sciences, Nasra’a Abdulaziz and Marwa Youssef, elaborated on the Corona pandemic and the ability of societies to achieve sustainable environmental recovery from this pandemic.

Furthermore, the meeting discussed the issue of chemical pesticides and their impact on the environment and its components, reviewing the most important instructions that a person must follow to protect himself and his environment from the danger of pollution caused by such chemical pesticides.

The attendees from UoB expressed their pleasure in attending such an interactive student forum, which provided them with an opportunity to present projects from various disciplines to protect and enhance the environment. As the students’ presentations indicated their high level of environmental awareness, which was expressed by the solutions proposed to trend towards renewable energy, green buildings and environmental conservation.

For his part, the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Al-Hilo, commended the student participation and interaction during the meeting, proposing the establishment of an environmental forum for students of all specializations to present and discuss environmental projects as part of efforts for environmental improvement.
