UoB Students Win The “Best Technology” Award in the Middle East from Huawei  

 

The University of Bahrain (UoB) team participating in the Huawei Innovation Competition in the Middle East won the award for the best technology in the competition in which ten countries from the region participated. 

The students from the College of Information Technology at the University used artificial intelligence to provide solutions for people with special needs, which was praised by the competition jury and qualified the team for this award. 

The President of UoB, Prof. Dr. Riyad Yousif Hamzah, congratulated the winning team that represented the Kingdom of Bahrain in the regional competition, pointing out that technology competitions are a good opportunity to test students’ skills and creative abilities. 

Moreover, Prof. Hamzah stated that ” Every time the University students participate in such competitions, they prove that they are equipped with high skills and diverse abilities that enable them to solve problems, innovate, and work in a team.” 

He further added that “The University has been keen to develop its strategies to promote project-based learning, problem-solving, investigation and evidence generation,” stressing that this has improved the quality of outputs. 

The President of the University thanked the College of Information Technology, and Huawei, the sponsor of the competition, for their interest in encouraging students to keep pace with modern technical developments and informing them of the latest technologies. 

UoB’s team consisted of students from the Computer Engineering Department at the College of Information Technology: Weaam Ajoor, Nasser Al-Dosari, and Omar Ali, in addition to the team supervisor, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Riyad Kasantini. 

For her part, the Dean of the College of Information Technology at the University, Dr. Lamya Mohammed Al-Jasmi, explained that “The student competition was focused on innovation,” noting that the College team that represented the Kingdom of Bahrain was able to win the award for the best technology category, and noting that “The outstanding performance by the students in the competition reflects their ability in dealing with modern technologies, innovating and implementing digital solutions with these technologies, in addition to having the skill of working in a team.” 

The team presented its project in the offices of Huawei in Bahrain, while the projects were subject to arbitration by specialists and experts in the giant company through video communication. 

The CEO of Huawei Bahrain, Jason Kao, congratulated the winners, saying “I congratulate the students of the University of Bahrain who won the Best Technology category in the inaugural Huawei Innovation Competition in the Middle East.” 

He further stated that “The participating students have proven that they have distinctive creative and innovative capabilities and great potential in using digital solutions. As we invest in qualified human cadres in the field of information and communication technology in Bahrain, we are investing in the future of this country to enable it to achieve digital transformation and implement its development plans and ambitious national aspirations.”.
