UoB Students Win Third Place in Huawei Competition in China
The University of Bahrain has added to its list of scientific and technological achievements in international competitions. The University students’ team ranked third in the world at the finals of the Huawei 2017 ICT Skills Competition which was held in the People’s Republic of China on Monday. The competition aimed at students of technical universities in the Middle East. The University also won the Huawei Award for Academic Excellence in the Middle East. Dr. Mazen Mohammed Ali, Head of Information Systems at the University of Bahrain, received the Best Supervisor Award from among the participating teams.
ÙˆThe University team won third place among 39 finalists from 10 countries in the Middle East. The University has won the Huawei Academic Excellence Award from among 121 participating universities. A total of 4133 students took part in the preliminary round.
The President of the University Prof. Riyad Yousef Hamzah expressed his happiness and pride of this global achievement, congratulating the participating students and supervisors on this result. Prof. Hamzah also expressed his thanks and appreciation to the leadership and the government for their special attention to information technology as well as for providing advanced infrastructure in the fields of communication technology and digital technology through the e-government, and projects and competitions offered locally, regionally and globally. Prof. Hamzah said that the University “places among its priorities the knowledge and scientific output of the students to let them keep pace with the scientific movement and compete in their fields with the world’s most prestigious university students.†He called for engaging the students in local and international activities and competitions, as an important source of knowledge acquired by students through experience and expertise.
Huawei has awarded the winners the opportunity to visit the company’s global headquarters in Shenzhen, China, and meet the leading figures of the brand. The winning students will also learn about Huawei’s experience in telecommunications, corporate and consumer services.
The University was represented by: Mohammed Yasir Yassin, Ahmed Samer Abdulrahman, Duaa Amer Ibrahim, and professors supervising student performance.
The finalists were held in the People’s Republic of China from 23 to 26 December 2017. The first place was won by the Republic of Lebanon, and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan came second.
The competition aims at discovering the local talents with promising prospects in information and communication technology and developing them in accordance with the latest developments in the world of technology.
The competition is based on advanced technologies in IP and IT. The contestants underwent tests that measure their knowledge of cloud computing, network transformation and routing.
The students of the University of Bahrain won first five places in the qualifier tournaments in the Kingdom of Bahrain, among 120 contestants from the Kingdom’s universities and institutes. The competition started in October 2017.
