UoB Updates Information Systems in Collaboration with e-Government
Eng. Wael Mohamed Attia Abomesallam, Director of the Information Technology Centre at the University of Bahrain, pointed out that, as part of its continuous efforts to keep up to date with the latest technological developments and solutions, the University has started moving towards implementing cloud-based services in collaboration with the Information and eGovernment Authority.
In a press statement, Eng. Abomesallam said that the university has made remarkable progress in developing cloud computing-based information systems, and one of its future projects is the electronic archiving of files and records of both students and employees.
As for the e-services offered to students, Eng. Abomesallam said that the university has developed an electronic fee payment system. This system provides students with a secure, fast and effective way of paying their tuition fees. The University is in the process of adding an online service to the Student Information System (SIS), which would allow students to keep track of the payments they have so far made and facilitate the process of retrieving fees.
He pointed out that the Information Technology Centre is also in the process of developing an online graduation clearance form. He explained that starting from the next academic year, students would be able to complete this clearance form online prior to graduation and receiving their degrees. Obtaining graduate certificates and appealing a grade assigned by an instructor will also be done online. Developing these electronic services, in collaboration with the Information and eGovernment Authority, is almost complete, and will be launched via the eGovernment Portal, added Eng. Abomesallam.
To maintain up-to-date contact information, students can now login to: Profile.uob.edu.bh. This will allow them to change their passwords and receive text messages, notifications and alerts related to their academic progress.
As for faculty members, Eng. Abomesallam explained that a key directive of the University President involves offering expanded e-services to enable heads of department to efficiently carry out their duties. “Developing the Student Information System (SIS) has allowed heads of departments to have access to a wide range of information. The information retrieved covers statistics, data and reports of students enrolled in an academic department including graduates and defaulters, as well as attendance records. Heads of departments can perform several operations, such as adding courses and new sections. This would facilitate registration process and allow students to check seat availability,” said Eng. Abomesallam.
“The Centre has organized several training courses for heads of departments and faculty members on how to use the SIS system,” added Eng. Abomesallam.
To obtain feedback, the Information Technology Centre is in the process of conducting a user survey to illicit satisfaction in relation to the University systems, applications and technical infrastructure.
The University of Bahrain has implemented electronic correspondence and archiving systems for since January 2017. These systems have significantly contributed to reducing reliance on paper based correspondence and reduced costs.
